Enjoying the Beach Club all to ourselves at the end of summer.
This cute little squirrel caused us a lot of anxiety. We had all of our trees trimmed, but didn't realize there were a couple of baby squirrels up in one of our very tall palm trees. By late afternoon we started hearing lots of squeaking coming from the tree. At first we thought it was just a bird, so Mark went out to investigate with Peter. Soon he saw something drop from the sky and land on the cement in our backyard. Unfortunately, it was a baby squirrel who was doing very poorly after the fall. The mother squirrel eventually came to get it and dragged it off over the fence. Within a few minutes she was back pacing under the tree, and we noticed she couldn't climb back up it because the leaves had been cut. We also heard more squeaking and noticed another baby squirrel still in the tree.
Mark decided, as it was getting dark, to try to attach a rope from one tree to the big palm by drilling a hole in a ball and throwing it. We left it up all night hoping the squirrel mother would climb up and rescue the baby. In the morning we realized she hadn't ,and the baby squirrel was still stuck in the tree. It was heartbreaking to watch the mother pace and the baby climb further and further out on the tree. By afternoon we saw another bundle drop from the sky and this time land in the bushes. We all went running and found the little baby clinging to some branches in the bush. Mark ran and got a box and we lowered the squirrel inside, gave it some nuts and water, and hoped the mother squirrel would come find it. About 30 minutes later she did, and off she carried the little squirrel to her nest.
From now on we are going to ask our tree trimmers to check before they cut the branches!
